May Day Parade, Havana, Cuba
Recently in Cuba on a People to People Cultural Exchange, I was lucky enough to experience the annual May Day Parade. The 1st of May is typically a celebration of worker's rights worldwide. This year however, countries including Bangladesh, Turkey and Spain
held massive protest for better working conditions and pay. In Havana, an estimated 400 thousand marchers paraded past Revolution Square. As opposed to a protest march, these worker groups marched in celebration of a "Prosperous and Sustainable Socialist State." The contrast was remarkable. Indeed, these workers and members of the military appeared passionate about the benefits of their socialist system of government.
