Escape to the Mountains
Many tourists assume that
Dubai, the emirate, and Dubai, the city, are roughly contiguous, but they are not. For the traveler willing to take the time to venture beyond the city, the other towns in the emirate can be fascinating excursions. Hatta, at an altitude of 1,269 feet in the Hajar Mountains, was long a popular summer retreat for residents of Dubai looking to escape the heat of lower elevations. Recently it has again begun to attract expats, Emiratis, and even some travelers visiting Dubai. The popular Heritage Village includes traditional mountain dwellings, while the city has several 18th-century buildings of note. Don’t miss a chance to go “wadi driving” and visit some of the palm oases and natural pools in the region.
