Trekking thru Ruins in the Rain
In a few years a dam will be completed and the ruins of Hasankeyf will be flooded. Luckily, the government is building an underwater museum at the moment. Part Romanesque, part Middle Earth, Hasankeyf is a small town full of rock dwellings and endless stories. There has been a family of storks that have lived on top of a mosque minaret for 3 generations. Legend has it when the stork leaves for winter a massive snow storm will come. The stork wasn't there when we were and winter certainly came with force this year.
The castle is now closed to tourists in order to lessen the attraction of the area due to the impeding flood, but it is still worth the trip to walk through the street bazaar and take in the history.
