One of the most famous drives in the world is the narrow road that goes along the eastern side of the island of Maui in Hawaii. 54 miles does not sound like a long trip, but it is endless curves and steep rises that can take a couple hours to navigate. Plus, every couple of miles is a magnificent vista from which to see the Pacific Ocean, or a waterfall.
This was taken on the southern portion of the road, where the rainforest gives way to grassland which gradually drops toward the ocean. It was one of countless times that we stopped the vehicle to just enjoy being there.
If you decide to drive the Hana Highway, I would suggest devoting several hours to complete it, and consider a 4x4 vehicle. Start from Kihei Town and work your way East. There are several waterfalls along the way, and Red Sand Beach is near Hana. Continue South to emerge into the grasslands. You will be amazed at all of the things you can see along one stretch of road.
