Catching the sunrise over Haleakala requires a bit of an effort. You have to wake up really early. Then drive up winding roads with very little visibility. Then if you're early enough and you secure a parking spot close to the top, you have to wait a bit for the actual sunrise. Then there's the waiting in the frigid cold before the sun finally makes its appearance. It will feel like the longest few minutes! But then, the glorious sun slowly ascends above the clouds, and it is breathtaking! There's something spectacular about catching that first light of day. It is invigorating, inspiring, and for quite a few couples who make the trek, the perfect backdrop for a wedding proposal. Whatever reason you have for making the effort to see the sunrise over the top of Haleakala, it is absolutely worth it! The drive back down also gives you some of the best views of the island.
