Hakodate City Museum of Northern Peoples
The Hakodate City Museum of Northern Peoples has good displays on the Ainu, perhaps the least assimilated of Japan’s early inhabitants. Hands-on activities include paper-cutting in traditional Ainu patterns and musical-instrument-making. The one problem is that not much is offered from the Ainu point of view; it’s all from the perspective of Japanese looking at the Ainu and interpreting what they observe. Still, it’s worth a stop, and it’s in a nice park famous for cherry blossoms.
