Hakodate City Museum of Northern Peoples
Hakodate City Museum of Northern PeoplesThe Hakodate City Museum of Northern Peoples has good displays on the Ainu, perhaps the least assimilated of Japan’s early inhabitants. Hands-on activities include paper-cutting in traditional Ainu patterns and musical-instrument-making. The one problem is that not much is offered from the Ainu point of view; it’s all from the perspective of Japanese looking at the Ainu and interpreting what they observe. Still, it’s worth a stop, and it’s in a nice park famous for cherry blossoms.
