Hacienda Yaxcopoil (YASH-coh-poh-EEL)Magic happens when you're traveling with your eyes and heart wide open. Hacienda Yaxcopoil wasn't on our list of explorations–but when we passed it on the way to Uxmal, our heads simultaneously just spun around. What we had glimpsed in just a split second was so breathtaking, that although we were pressed for time, we had to stop and take a closer look.
The hacienda dates back to the 17th century and was once considered one of the most important estates in the Yucatán, spreading across 22,000 acres. Originally a cattle farm, it later became a henequen plantation during the golden age of the 'agave sisal'. Yaxcopoil means 'the place of the green alamo trees' in the Yucatec Maya language, and a majestic towering canopied tree can still be found at the entrance.
Today the estate spreads across much less acreage, but there are still a good number of magnificent buildings to see here. The facades are richly textured, and in some of the interiors, old plantation machinery is still in place as it must have been a hundred years ago. Yaxcopoil feels like walking into an elaborate film set, and photographers especially may feel they've just gone to heaven. I certainly did.
