Vienna is a true city. The capital is big, cosmopolitan and cultured – not many would expect rustic country life to be so close. Just take the Südbahn 20 minutes out of Vienna and you will find yourself in a completely different world. There are the rolling vineyards that stretch across great plains towards the horizon and quaint villages sitting in-between. Especially the town of Gumpoldskirchen knows how to keep their rural heritage alive. Not only can you take long walks among the grapevines, but you should try to sit down at one of the “heuriger,” which offer typical home-made specialties and wine. These places celebrate the long-standing tradition of rustic living around Vienna, and can give you a great taste of what lies beyond the big city.
