The island's Millennium Tapestry was begun in 1996 and worked on by members of the local community to mark 1,000 years of Guernsey history. The 10 embroidered panels, one for each century, depict daily life through the centuries, featuring markets, farmers, soldiers and cooks, but also events. For example, there's a Protestant being burned at the stake in the 16th-century panel, and a civil war in the 17th-century panel. Those inspired by the creativity on show can stock up on yarn and embroidery books in the gift shop.
