Gstaad
Around 90 minutes south of Switzerland's capital, Bern, Gstaad sits amid the stunning lakes and soaring peaks of the Bernese Oberland. It's a part of Switzerland where nature is at its most breath-taking with green valleys in the shadow of some of the most dramatic mountains in the Alps, and yet it is also home to one of the country's most civilized resorts, Gstaad. Most of the buildings here are in the traditional chalet style and Hollywood, as well as European, royalty comes to ski the slopes in the winter and hike mountain trails in the summer.

The Huus Hotel embodies Gstaad's sense of style: From the outside it has the sloping roofs and weathered wood walls typical of chalets in the region. Inside, the design is cool and contemporary. The Ermitage Wellness & Spa Hotel sits above the town and offers views over the valley below, best enjoyed after soaking in one of their mineral pool or reinvigorated after a massage. On a sunny day, the terrace at the Restaurant Sonnenhof is one of the most coveted tables in town with its views of the surrounding Saanen mountains.

Gstaad
In Switzerland's posh German-speaking ski town of Gstaad, you could easily spend all your time indulging in the sybaritic life of sipping and shopping. But outside of town, the trekking is superb in these Bernese Oberland mountains, and accessible even to relatively inexperienced hikers. Just south of town, a loop trail goes around Lauenen Lake, while at the Arnen reservoir you can take a dip in the water, followed by a picnic in a flowering meadow. You can take a nearby cable car up to the Höhi Wispile peak where you'll find the start of another hiking trail. A more ambitious goal is to the follow the long Hundsrügg mountain ridge north of town.
