Greeking.Me : A Tour For The Foodie In Athens Greece
To start our Greece trip, what better way than to experience the culture through the food and the Café society of Athens ? Greeking.me was the answer with a resounding yes. Our tour for foodies took us to cafés, open air markets, Greek delicatessens and Tavernas where families have been taking their families for generations. Greece is a true food culture that has been in existence for thousands of years. Local is the word here, the meats, dairy, coffee and cheese of course are all locally sourced from surrounding farming communities. This is comfort food elevated, and our tour guides explained the nuances of the food, and the many influences from different regions of Europe. Another bonus of the tour, is that this is a walking tour, and you get to take in the architecture, ancient ruins, sounds and smells of the food offerings of Athens. We walked through many different neighborhoods that ranged from the upscale to the working mans. One of my favorite stops was towards the end, where we could just sit at a street side café and people watch. Athens is a vibrant city, with people that take their food very seriously and love to share it. But make no mistake, the Greeks know how to celebrate life, their culture and their food. Tours can be customized to what you’re interested in, and not just for foodies either. Greeking.me offer Mythology tours, Athens in one day, Greek Ambrosia, and yes the Acropolis. On their web site you can create a bespoke tour by filling out a short form that covers your interests, party size, language spoken your dates in Athens. One note, bring your appetite, you will be eating a lot of different foods, from traditional pastries from a shop going back to 1908, lemon scented chicken and special local style doughnuts. This is a great way to get the feel, taste and culture of Athens and it’s also an excellent to familiarize yourself with this vibrant world class city.
