Despite the singular name, the Seto Great Bridge is actually six bridges that cut through five islands in the Inland Sea and connect Shikoku with Honshu, 13 kilometers (eight miles) away. These structures aren’t just engineering wonders (in suspension, cable-stayed and truss styles); they’re also just cool to pass under as they stretch as far as the eye can see. Begun in the late 1970s, the bridges required some 705,000 tons of steel for their construction—more than eight times the amount used for the Golden Gate Bridge.
