Great Sand Dunes National Park
The Great Sand Dunes National Park
The one thing EVERYONE tells you to do when you move to Alamosa, is that you MUST visit the sand dunes! Well, I'm not going to lie, I'm from Michigan, where we have the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, so I wasn't completely sold on the whole thing. It's a 45 minute drive to them, and if you've seen one pile of sand, haven't you seen them all? Well my brother-in-law was visiting from NY, and he wanted to see them being the outdoorsy type, so we went.(thats him in the background purposely looking like a tourist as he photobombs us) My only complaint is that nobody told me it was literally a 600 ft walk through sand just to get to the base of the dunes. Man was it hot out! I felt like my body was going to combust at any moment! However, once you have climbed up aways, you get a very nice breeze. Fun little fact for ya, this park boasts the tallest sand dunes in North America piling a massive 750 ft high! The men decided they were going to climb the tallest dune, which was hilarious because you could hear them argueing all the way up like an old married couple. Ahh family, you got to love them. All in all we had a pretty awesome time. Beautiful scenery, plenty to do, and admission was only $3 to get in per person. Oh yah, and bring sneakers, they save your feet from getting scortched!
