The Great Mosque in Xi'an is unlike any other I've visited. We couldn't find the minaret and it turns out that's because there isn't one! There is a multi-story Chinese pavilion in its place which makes sense since the architecture and construction of the entire complex is in the Chinese style. It is the oldest and one of the largest mosques in China and if that's not enough to entice you it is surrounded by alleys filled with the most wonderful street food and noodle shops. I recommend the traditional lamb stew with bread crumbs served with sweet pickled whole garlic on the side.
