The reef’s rich environment provides sanctuary to a remarkable variety of creatures, ranging from tiny microorganisms to sharks, dolphins, whales, dugongs and giant sea turtles. These waters are home to a plethora of stunning corals, mollusks, starfish and sea urchins. More than 1,500 species of fish thrive here, including the distinctive clown fish—made famous by Finding Nemo—and the imposing Maori wrasse, a brilliantly colored swimmer that can grow to almost two meters (six feet) long and has an oddly lumpy forehead.
