Advent, the month before Christmas, holds great significance in all of Austria, but the city of Graz takes holiday spirit to a whole different level. The entire city is transformed into a glowing winter wonderland, with ornate light decorations suspended between the Baroque facades and seasonal market stands popping up on every corner. On the main square, a giant Christmas tree rivals the towers of the City Hall in size and splendor and the waffle stand fills the air with a smell of brown sugar and cinnamon. The traditional advent calendar is projected onto the Rathaus and turns the square into what looks like a colorful art installation. Visit the life-size nativity scene made entirely out of ice, or see one of the many Christmas concerts around the city. Try a mug of the typical mulled wine or Christmas punch, which will warm you up when the snowflakes start to fall. Look around at the red-nosed children and bright windows, or close your eyes and just listen for a faint Christmas carol to be whispered your way.
