Spanish Roots
Spanish Roots
One of the most historic spots in Texas, Goliad and the historic sites nearby provide a singular window into the state’s Spanish, Mexican, and Republic of Texas legacies. Get a feel for colonial missionary life at the Mission Espíritu Santo State Historic Site, a reconstruction of the mid-18th-century Franciscan church that was established by the Spanish during the area’s settlement. The nearby Presidio La Bahia (seen here), a fort built by the Spanish to protect the colony, also gives a sense of the close relationship between the Spanish Crown and the Catholic Church.
