Golan Heights

One of the most visited regions in northern Israel, the Golan Heights combines beautiful natural scenery, significant archaeological and historic sites, and exciting outdoor activities. Reaching heights of 1,200 meters (almost 4,000 feet), the peaks of the Golan Heights overlook volcanic hills and snowcapped mountains that attract skiers in the winter and hikers in the summer. Forests with deer reserves, artisanal wineries and Byzantine ruins are some of the many attractions in this rich and diverse area.

This Way Home?

The Golan Heights is a very unusual place. The Golan Valley just near the Syrian border was 'annexed' by Israel in 1967 as a strategic base and serves as a border of sorts between Syria and the more populated areas of Israel. I went into actual Israeli bunkers on the hilltop where we heard shots fired on the Syrian side (currently in civil war).

This sign says a lot to me. Just this week (11/25/13) Syria launched a missile at the Golan Heights. Depending on who tells the story, who knows which way is home? Somehow I can't imagine that this is over...

Sunset in the Golan

This was the view from my cabin during a trip to the Golan Heights in the north of Israel. The hand sculpture on the right was made from old car parts, and the vehicles on the left were parked right on the cliff overlooking the valley.
