This open-air park and museum and the buildings within its boundaries are together designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of their representation of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution. Included are several handsome Japanese-style mansions that once belonged to Western merchants and expats. The most famous, the Glover Mansion, is the former abode of Thomas Blake Glover—a key modernizer in Japan’s coal-mining and shipbuilding industries. The site also offers great views over the port.
