Though it's been open for years now, not many people know that the storied South Beach property of the late Italian fashion designer, Gianni Versace, is now a boutique hotel and the exclusive restaurant, Gianni's at the Villa Casa Casuarina. The setting is grand and opulent, especially if you're sitting outside for dinner by the pool surrounded by mosaics, palms and fountains. It's often crowded, so reservations are necessary, but while you wait there is a cozy bar up front and the bartenders are jovial and courteous, and make very good dry martini. When your table is ready, expect Italian and Mediterranean fare. The executive Chef Thomas Stewart, created a menu that wisely hews on the side of seasonal ingredients. Some of the dishes, many of which are vegetarian friendly, include crispy grilled octopus, fresh burrata cheese, and pasta dishes like orecchiette with broccolini, italian sausage and a tuscan pepper sauce. Fish and meat lovers will appreciate menu items like St. Remo shrimp or Wagyu Fillet Mignon. Beyond excellent food, the vibe here is romantic and private, even as it is situated on rollicking Ocean Drive.
