If you have ever wondered where the majestic Lipizzaner horses of the Spanish Riding School come from, a short trip into Austria’s south might be very rewarding. The Piber stud farm is home to the oldest thoroughbred horses in Europe and takes its mission of delivering healthy, promising stallions to Vienna very seriously. Believe it or not, but the beautiful white horses are actually born black and undergo many color changes before they reach their prime. At Piber you can tour the stables, come face to face with the mysterious creatures and hear all about the tedious process of selecting only the best Lipizzaner for training. You can pet the fowls and take a look at the small carriage museum, which shows you just how hard it must have been to get around some 200 years ago. Piber is a wonderful visit for the whole family and just 40 minutes outside of Graz.
