George Washington House & Museum

Bridgetown, Barbados

The only place outside the U.S. where you can say ‘President George Washington slept here’ is in an 18th-century plantation house on a ridge northeast of Bridgetown. Bush Hill House (renamed George Washington House) still stands, with a bathhouse built in 1719, a stable that dates to 1830, and a curious collection of antique medical devices like thumb lancets and cupping glasses. Local legend has it that 19-year-old George and his ailing older brother Lawrence rented the house in 1751. Thankfully, he lived to tell the tale—the future founding father contracted small pox here and was treated by Dr. Lanaham, a third-generation Barbadian.
