Chicago Mix: a Windy City Tradition
A combination of sugar and salt, sweet and savory, there's nothing like Garrett's "Chicago
Mix"—a combination of caramel corn and cheese popcorn. It's the kind of thing I crave in such a way that it's a good thing I don't live in Chicago. Sure, you can order it online nowadays, but it's not the same as standing in line (there's always a line it seems) and smelling that warm caramel popcorn aroma. Not to mention, the bag is filled with the fresh and hot from the popper concoction. Be forewarned: once you open the waxed paper bag, you can't stop eating this stuff. Your fingers will get kind of orange-y, sticky and greasy (but in a good way). Suffice it to say, it's highly addictive. Garrett's Popcorn has been around since 1949 and has several locations. I have discovered the Randolph Street location usually has shorter lines (a good thing when you are running late to the airport and have made your taxi stop at the shop). Although now the airport finally has a shop!
