Garfield Park Conservatory

Opened in 1908, this urban sanctuary was designed by renowned landscape architect Jens Jensen. The grounds—combining the display houses and outdoor gardens—cover 14 acres and feature more than 5,000 rare and exotic plants from around the globe, making it one of the largest and most diverse public gardens. Start your visit at the Palm House, where you’ll swiftly be greeted by about six dozen varieties of palm trees, ample waterfalls, and koi fish. Be sure to catch a glimpse of the Fern Room, too, a green retreat complete with one specimen thought to be over 300 years old. If you’re still on the hunt for the perfect souvenir, grab some honey on your way out—the conservatory sells its own.

Bring the Outdoors Inside

Chicago is home to two conservatories, the Garfield Park Conservatory (photo above and location listed) on the west side and the Lincoln Park Conservatory on the north side.

Both locations provide a temporary tropical escape from the elements but I prefer the former of the two indoor gardens as it's simply larger. However, there's a lot more to do near the Lincoln Park Conservatory and Garfield Park gets a little sketchy.

No entrance fee.
