Innovative responses to a natural tragedy
Scattered around New Zealand's third-biggest city are creative reminders of how the residents of Christchurch have been resilient and innovative following the powerful earthquakes that rocked the city in 2010 and 2011. Many quake-damaged buildings needed to be demolished, and one-off projects and art installations have popped up to 'fill the gaps'. Interesting examples of the city's urban regeneration include a community library in an abandoned refrigerator, a coin-operated Dance-O-Mat dance floor—hook up your own music for 30 minutes—and a bicycle-powered outdoor cinema. See Gap Filler's Facebook page to see what quirky and crazy ideas are currently happening.
