The Gallipoli Peninsula, at the northwesternmost end of the Dardanelles, was the site of some of World War I’s bloodiest battles. It was here in 1915 where the victorious Ottoman army fought off an eight-month campaign by the British Empire and their allied forces of Australia, New Zealand and France to take Constantinople. By the time the Allied Forces accepted defeat and evacuated the peninsula, more than 111,000 soldiers had died.
