The distance separating Québec’s Lower and Upper towns is not that formidable—about 200 feet—and if you have the time and are not deterred by a little effort, you can easily walk between the two along Old Québec’s picturesque streets. Still, the Old Québec funicular has its appeals if only to take a ride on this historic railway, which first opened in 1879 and travels only 210 feet. The lower station is located just a few blocks inland from the Place Royale; the upper station sits on the Dufferin Terrace. Between the two stations, the short ride is in cars with large windows on all sides, offering views of the Lower Town and the St. Lawrence River. At only $3 Canadian, it’s also a bargain.
