Fundación Canaria Cristino de Vera

Modern Art in a Private Setting
The Fundación Cristino de Vera-Espacio Cultural CajaCanarias (say that three times fast!) is neatly tucked away in a former residence in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. I stumbled across it by accident, I saw an open door, snuck in, and found myself in a beautiful, private art museum. The place is dedicated to renowned local painter, Cristino de Vera, who was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife 1931. His works are exhibited in changing exhibitions, upstairs. Works shown are on loan from the CajaCanarias Art Collection (a bank), the collection of the Canary Island Government, and private collections all over. There's also a video playing about Cristino de Vera, with English subtitles, in case the visitors want to immerse themselves a bit more.

The ground floor has a gallery that features changing shows of contemporary, mostly Spanish artists. When I visited, the paintings of Pedro de Guezala, another local, were on display. I didn't spend hours at the Fundación Cristino de Vera, but I really enjoyed my brief dip into art that may be much harder to find outside of the Canary Islands.

The design and layout of the space was interesting to me, as well. It is well done, architecturally, for a 'residence turned contemporary museum', which must have presented quite the challenge. It's a quiet, peaceful place to wander through, and not just when it's too hot outside : )
