Standing Sentinel
The days of Black Beard and Captain Morgan terrorizing the high seas have long since past, but the Fuerte de San Miguel still watches vigilantly over the city of Campeche. The fortress is located upon a rise just south of the city and attractive for its views over Campeche and the Gulf of Mexico as well as its charm as a Spanish colonial structure. The fort houses a museum that covers the colonial history of Campeche and the Maya period of the surrounding area. The fort is just one of several attractions in and around the colonial city. Campeche is renowned for the preservation of its colonial architecture and has a UNESCO World Heritage designation to show for it. The city offers a range of fresh seafood restaurants from high end dining in the city center to seafood stalls along the Bay of Campeche. The surrounding countryside is littered with Maya archaeological sites, so the area is well worth a few days of exploration.
