Fremantle Prison
The only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Western Australia served as a prison for nearly 140 years. Everything from the tiny cells to the artwork painted directly on the stone walls has a story to tell about convict life as far back as the 1850s. Since the walls can't talk, it's best to book a guided tour; themes range from escape sites and underground tunnel excursions to the morbid Torchlight Tour offered on Wednesday and Friday evenings.
