A significant group of German emigrants established communities here in the mid-19th century, and their influence can still be felt throughout the state. In Fredericksburg, German traditions and culture endure to the present day, making it a popular day- or weekend-trip in Texas. Amid B&Bs and antique shops, there are lively places for beer and bratwurst, such as the Fredericksburg Brewing Company, or full, traditional German menus, like at the Ausländer Restaurant and Biergarten. Modern restaurants and trendy boutiques abound, while the city also serves as a launching pad for exploring wine country; there are more than ten wineries between Fredericksburg and Johnson City, alone.
