Franciscan Church of the Annunciation

Prešernov trg 4, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia

En route to working in Croatia for a few months a few years ago, I decided to stop and spend a few nights in Ljubljana along the way and I’m forever glad that I did. By chance, I happened to be there both nights of the annual Slovenian Musical Days, where there were concerts-literally- on almost every street corner, all over town. It reminded me so much of Paris’ annual Nuit Blanche that is the 24 hour celebration of culture, that I’ve long treasured. From those two nights in Slovenia, I have the most vivid memory of a cellist, wearing a mask and playing from a second story balcony. I stood there for at least an hour, completely swept away. The performances at the annual concert are classical and are all crafted from contemporary Slovenian composers. It is seen as a celebration of national musical creativity and I couldn’t agree more. I began my wandering that night at this beautiful Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. Its red color is symbolic of the Franciscan monastic order and the church has been protected as a cultural monument of national significance of Slovenia since 2008.
