Fort Rotterdam

Part of what makes this 17th-century fort so interesting is its layers of history. Once the center of Dutch rule in this part of Sulawesi (you’ll note it’s named after the Netherlands city), Fort Rotterdam is considered Asia’s best-preserved example of Dutch architecture. It stands on the site of a 16th-century fort built by the Gowa state that failed to keep Dutch powers at bay. Be sure to climb up on the ramparts for terrific harbor and city views.
