Fort Amsterdam

Fort Louis and Fort Amsterdam

The island was ruled by a number of powers in its history, including Spain and Britain as well as the Netherlands and France. To fortify the island against inevitable attacks, two impressive forts were built—both of which still stand. The restored Fort Louis is perched on the highest point overlooking Marigot Bay. The ruins of Fort Amsterdam, constructed more than 100 years ago, stand watch over Philipsburg.
