What was originally an east-west Indian trail, La Bahia Scenic Highway stretches from western Louisiana to southeast Texas. Rich in history, it was the first highway to be designated a scenic highway in Texas. Begin in Burton and make some stops at historic buildings along the route, like the Burton Cotton Gin and Museum. Pass through the ghost town of Gay Hill and stop in Independence for lunch, a small Texas town that has been well preserved with over 30 points of historical interest. The journey ends in Washington and Washington-on-the-Brazos, two more history-filled spots. In Washington-on-the-Brazos, you can visit the home of the last president of the Republic of Texas, Anson Jones (seen here).
