Floating Islands

Uros Floating Islands
We visited the Island of Amanecer, which means sunrise, one of the Floating Islands of Uros (there are about 60), as a day trip from Puno. We took a private boat and were greeted by a smaller reed raft which first took us through the reeds where we saw how they Uros people fish and cut down the reeds they use to build their island, boats, and houses. We then went to the island where they demonstrated how they rebuild the island every few years from the compost earth that comes up from the bottom of the lake. They form this compost into large bricks that tied together and layered with reeds.
