Flame Towers

Mehdi Hüseyn Street, Bakı, Azerbaijan

The Flame Towers are three tongue-shaped towers that dominate the Baku skyline. The capital of Azerbaijan has been flush with cash ever since the nation’s current oil boom began in the last decade. As a result ostentatious buildings like these have been rising quicker than the price of gas. At night, the Flame Towers display -- wait for it --flames, a reference to the ancient fire-obsessed religion of Zoroastrianism, which was popular in Azerbaijan in pre-Christian and pre-Muslim times. In June 2013, a Fairmont Hotel will be flicking on its lights for the first time in one of the towers.
