As the song says; row your boat [canoe or kayak] gently down a stream.. or vigorously, for that matter.
Five Mile Creek Canoe & Company is located in the small town of Brookside, which is located 20 minutes northwest of downtown Birmingham.
Transportation from the canoe company is provided to the launch point, some 4.5 miles up stream. It takes two-to-three hours to paddle back to the site. Kayaks are available for $25 and canoes for $30. The company only accepts cash at the moment.
The location of the company sits on a greenway with a campsite, two miles of walking paths, and fishing.
The town is only a fragment of what it once was, however, glimpses of the towns coal mining past can be seen in the nearby forest.
Brookside is also home to the first Russian Orthodox Church constructed south of the Mason-Dixon Line. The church is still in operation today and hosts a Russian Food Festival every November.
Several old cemeteries are within a few miles of the town, one of which containing the grave site of a man who fought in the Revolutionary War. The cemetery often serves as an excursion on the canoe route.
The canoe company is owned by the town and has enjoyed great success.
