Hugh Acheson is a name you might now know. Until a year ago, few outside Athens did. Hugh opened Five & Ten years ago, a Canadian cooking Southern-inspired cuisine. It was a hit. He won best restaurant in Atlanta despite being 60 miles northeast of the city. Now, Hugh is on TV, has three restaurants, a cookbook, two James Beard awards and the best creme brulee I have ever had. Hugh isn't there much anymore. But, the executive chef follows right in his footsteps. Its not fancy, its not expensive (by Atlanta standards). It is, however, always fresh and delicious.
What makes it so good? Synergy. I have never tasted food that works together so well. Often, I read the menu and cannot help but wonder how the combinations will work. But, wow do they work. I have never had a meal I didn't love!
Here is the best-kept secret: they offer a prix-fixe for seatings before 6:00. $30 gets you three courses and the menu changes weekly. Often, the entree alone is close to $30. Wine pairings are another $15. Get them. Trust me.
