Fishing Homer
Take your pick, anglers: Casting a line in Homer is easy, affordable and, at the manmade lagoon stocked with king and coho salmon near the Small Boat Harbor, even wheelchair-accessible. Visitors with deeper pockets can book charter boats from Homer Spit. The Halibut Fishing Capital of the World nets almost three million pounds of the flatfish annually—18 percent of U.S. commercial landings. In 2015, the community launched the Halibut Festival in mid-September, honoring fishing traditions in Homer.More Recommendations

A vegan goes fishing
For my dad's 50th birthday I bought him roundtrip flights to Alaska. I knew I was going to be there on business and I had him fly out and meet me when he was done. We had a whole road trip planned. It included hitting up the Homer Spit. My dad really wanted to go fishing. Now, as a vegan this isn't really my thing. But my dad really wanted to do it. So I went and took part in the catch and release of over a dozen halibut. We had a lot of fun on the boat and I'm happy I went.

Gone Fishing!
The “halibut fishing capital of the world” lived up to its billing. We booked a half-day excursion with Bob’s Trophy Charters and successfully hauled in the maximum of two keepers per person. To cap it off, we brought some of our freshly fileted catch to Captain Pattie’s Seafood Restaurant, where they cooked it up to our specification.
