On a recent road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco, my friends and I drove past a small road sign pointing to wine. This of course called for an immediate u-turn. After winding up a long, narrow, dusty road, we ended up in the middle of a bevy of wineries in the town of Los Olivos, CA.
The Santa Ynez Valley is known for producing high quality wines and is home to 60 wineries. Firestone Winery is one of those, founded and formerly owned by the Firestone family of Firestone tires. Firestone is settled in quaint country landscape and the outdoor patio has an intimate feel.
With less than a dozen red and white varietals, be sure to try most, if not all, of them. Though I gravitate toward sweeter wines, the Firestone merlot was a standout.
Once you're done, head down the road to Fess Parker Winery where the movie "Sideways" was filmed...but try not to disparage the merlot there.
