Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh 283110, India
The Taj Mahal's Red-Headed CousinWhile most tourists head into Agra to see the Taj Mahal, you can easily make a day trip of it and see the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri 40 km away. In fact, you can negotiate with a taxi to take you to all three in a day and make it back in time to the station for the Delhi train.
Where the Taj Mahal has white marble and intricate carvings, in my opinion, Fatehpur Sikri is a far more interesting visit. The entire complex is made out of vibrant red sandstone, and the gate alone (one of the tallest and imposing in the world) is well worth the trip.
