Carb Overload at Fat Sal'sFat Sal’s started from humble beginnings: the small stand on Gayley Avenue in Westwood offers greasy, carb-loaded sandwiches that are irresistible to tipsy UCLA students, who gather there on the weekends after the bars close and come back in the morning when the hangover hits. Stuffed with French fries, mozzarella sticks, pepperoni, chicken fingers, and more, it’s clear how the toasted subs from Fat Sal’s gained loyal followers by a college campus. But though the spot is known for drunk eats, it does it in an unexpectedly high-end way. These sandwiches are—no joke—actually good, even in the middle of the afternoon on a weekday. The place has the kind of vibe that Guy Fieri would covet, and in fact was featured on an episode of “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” back in 2014. Now expanded to include locations in Hollywood and Encino, as well as a not-too-shabby vegan menu, Fat Sal’s is a new classic with lasting power.
