In an ideal world, you would wake up in your bed, in the Faru Faru Lodge, to a glorious Serengeti sunrise, and through barely open eyes watch the animals gather at the waterhole through the nearly 40-foot wall of glass that keeps the heat and tsetse flies out. It isn’t such an ideal world, so you instead wake up at dawn and rush out for a morning game drive to watch the rest of the world wake up and stretch in their ‘beds’. It is no surprise that the Singita Grumeti Reserves was recently rated as the World’s Best Hotel by T+L. The location, service, food and guiding are all exceptional. With the most stylish and thoughtful furnishings in all of Tanzania - made to look like a 1950s botanist camp with modern amenities. There even is a “knitting kit” in the room for people with restless fingers and minds. At night, just before I go to bed, I have a shower in the lovely outdoor bath, and hear the roar and grunts of a lion … from exceptionally close by, so I hurry up and get into bed.
