Esperanza, an Auberge Resort

Carretera Transpeninsular Km. 7 Mz 10, Punta Ballena, 23410 Cabo San Lucas, B.C.S., Mexico

Esperanza, an Auberge Resort, sits on the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, offering guests exceptional views of the Sea of Cortéz. Each of the hotel’s 57 rooms faces the sea and Esperanza’s private beach but also offers access to four separate swimming pools. Hotel staff keep guests as busy as they want to be with a full schedule of activities, some of which are the usual Baja resort suspects like yoga lessons and cooking classes. A number of options are quite unique, however—book a master tequilero to teach you about the fine art of tequila appreciation, or take classes in Spanish, salsa, painting, and more. Guest rooms are gorgeous, with an earth-tone color scheme and fine, locally made handicrafts as decorative accents. Bathrooms in the casitas look out onto water, while villas have full kitchens and dining rooms.

A quiet bolt-hole, a world away from crazy Cabo

Cabo is crazy with Spring Breakers, but a few coves over is the luxurious Esperanza resort, far enough away from the maddening crowds, but close enough to benefit from the convenience of getting in/out of town. Great casita set up, with wide opening doors, a cool hot tub on every deck and awesome pool, beach and grounds. You never want to leave. It’s ridiculously expensive, especially for Mexico — $1000/night is the new $500/night — and everything is extra…and extra expensive. (Think Hawaii Prices, not Mexico Prices). But extremely nice people. Some decent restaurants. The good thing about the location is the you get both killer sunrises and sunsets, hard to find anywhere. Amazing light, all day and night. No humidity. Only a few bugs. I’m not a resort person, but this is a really nice resort. If you wanna splurge, this is a good place to start.

The cool thing about Cabo: You get sunrises AND sunsets

Being on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, finally dawned on me how cool it was to be oriented due south, so you get both screaming sunrises and glowing sunsets, every day. And then there’s the moon….
