The picturesque medieval fortress town of Erice stands high atop the hill that overlooks Trapani. The town is surrounded by stone walls, topped by an imposing castle and offers sweeping views of Trapani and the Sicilian coast. Erice is though to have been settled by Trojans more than 1,000 years B.C., and it changed hands many times over the millenia. Today the town boasts around 60 churches and two castles. Visitors can make the 2,500-foot ascent from Trapani aboard a cable car.
