Do you like burgers? (Nod approvingly.) What about beer? (Nod again, with additional intensity.) What about burgers and beer? (Applause.) If this roughly captures your state of mind when presented with such options, then head down to Engine No9 in downtown St. Petersburg. Executive Chef Jason Esposito grills gourmet Angus beef burgers (save for the shrimp, ahi-tuna, portebella options for the non-carnivores) with unctuous toppings. I had the Chubby Duck, a medium-rare burger topped with caramelized onions, pancetta, brie, foie gras, and duck kracklins, a combination which likely would leave many cardiologists shaking their heads disquietly. The burger went perfectly with the sweet potato fries which came with it and the two bottles of Fat Tire, one of the 65 beers they carry, I drained. Engine No9 bills itself a small sports bar which serves food but given the numerous local awards they’ve won for their burgers, I believe they’re understating the obvious: Their burgers are simply badass.
