Hamburg’s brand-new concert hall rises impressively some 110 meters (361 feet) above the shiny HafenCity district. Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, the distinctive building contains a Grand Hall for up to 2,100 guests, as well as a Recital Hall and a smaller studio venue for experimental music, lectures and workshops. In addition to hosting residencies by the likes of the NDR Symphony Orchestra, the Elbphilharmonie offers festivals, world-class performances and concerts that go beyond the classical realm.

“We don’t watch whales here, we watch containers!” This introduction by our politically completely incorrect MC set the tone for our time on the water. And massive container ships we watched, including how fast the skyscraper cranes unloaded them, as if the containers were wooden toy blocks.
