The Towering Cacti of Baja Sur
After setting off from our beachfront oasis at the Loreto Bay Spa and Resort, we headed out with Aventuras Mexico Profundo and found ourselves driving through dramatic desert landscapes, with thousands of these staggeringly giant cacti that are hundreds of years old. The scene is otherworldly, with fields of cacti overlooking a turquoise ocean. With our guide, we enjoyed several nature walks along the way, to learn about the cacti, their defense mechanisms, and how they grow to such incredible heights. We stopped for lunch at Concepcion Bay to enjoy a swim in its stunning clear waters, as well as for some fish tacos and a few giant margaritas. Our journey continued on to the historic French town of Santa Rosalia before arriving to charming San Ignacio, our base for heading to the Sierra de San Francisco mountans the following day, to explore 7,500 year old cave paintings that have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
