Translated as “the park of pleasant retreat,” Buen Retiro Park is one of Madrid‘s largest parks. Ideally located near the city center, El Retiro’s green space attracts both travelers and locals alike with its pleasant walks and paths, sculpture and monuments, boating lake and gardens. You could spend days wandering in the park, but my favorite aspects were the Jardín de los Planteles in the southwest corner of the park and the Crystal Palace, inspired by a similar building in London. Another notable spot is the Statue of the Fallen Angel (El Angel Caido) in the rose gardens, which interestingly lies 666 feet above sea level.
